Week 4

Letter B Lesson Prep

  • Print the digital downloads for all three days

  • Materials needed: Glue, scissors, crayons, sheet of construction paper(or printer paper can work too, for background page to glue cut outs onto), beads or buttons, brown felt(optional for the ears of the bear craft), wiggle eyes(optional)

  • For some younger children, depending on their ability to cut, you may want to cut out all the letters and shapes beforehand

  • Practice beforehand how you will explain and demonstrate to your child how to complete the craft

  • Keep in mind that the goal is not for the child’s craft to be perfect, and it is not wrong if they choose to do it differently than I have it pictured in my example!

  • Adult supervision is required to ensure the child is able to safely handle the materials and is given help when needed

  • Folding the paper to cut a hole for sticking the scissors through is one technique for cutting the center of the letter out

  • Fold the sheet with the dotted lines down the middle so that the capital appears on one side and the lower case appears on the other side, or cut the three pieces into sections

Week 4

Letter B Lesson Plans

Day 1 Lesson Plan:

Letter B Animal Alphabet Craft

Skills practiced:

Child practices recognizing letter B by spending time cutting it out, holding it, gluing it (fine motor skills), and transforming it into a memorable animal, a bear! Child hears and practices the sound of letter B.

  • Introduce the letter B to your child by showing them the capital letter and saying: this is letter B.

  • Introduce the sound letter B makes by saying: B says b, b-b-b. Say it with me, b-b-b.

  • Show your child the picture of the bear and ask them: what animal is this? …Yes this is a bear. B-b-bear has letter b in it. (point to the B at the beginning of the word and run your finger under the word as you say it). Ask your child to say it with you again as you run your finger under it. (If your child doesn’t want to say it with you, no big deal.)

  • Your child cuts out letter B (unless you already did). Give them as much help as they need. Practice the sounds of letter B again with the paper letter they have cut out.

  • Tell your child they will get to decorate the letter B as a bear. Show them the picture of the finished project and explain to them what the pieces are that they need to cut out. Help them cut out the pieces and show them where to glue them and assist them as needed.

  • Celebrate the completed craft and practice b-b-bear starts with B.

  • Let the craft dry and find a prominent place to hang/display it!

Day 2 Lesson Plan:

Lower Case B

Skills practiced:

Child practices recognizing uppercase/capital and lowercase letter B by seeing a display of the upper and lower-case letter and practices the sound of the letter. Child colors in a picture of a bat (fine motor skill).

  • Review the animal letter craft on display. Asking the child what animal it is and what sound we hear at the beginning of its name. Indicate that the bear has a friend coming to visit, and that friend is an animal that starts with a B.

  • Take out the uppercase letter B side of the folded paper and practice the sound of the letter and ask the child to think of an animal that starts with B that could be coming to visit the bear.

  • Reveal the lowercase side of the folded sheet and ask what picture is on it and what sound it starts with. This is the animal that came to visit the bear!

  • Help your child to notice the lowercase letter on the page and tell them that it is also letter B. It is lowercase B. Or sometimes with small children I call it little B. It also says ‘b’ like uppercase/capital(big) B.

  • Have your child color in the picture of the bat and display it next to the bear.

  • Practice B says b, b-b-b. Bat starts with b, b-b-bat.

Day 3 Lesson Plan:

Writing Letter B

Skills Practiced:

Child practices the writing strokes that create the upper and lower-case letter by tracing with various materials(for this lesson it is buttons or beads but you can glue a different material or trace with finger if you don’t have it).

  • With the writing letter B print out, trace or have your child trace the stroke lines of the upper and lowercase letter with their finger.

  • Take out the beads or buttons and ask your child what sound/letter beads/buttons start with.

  • Have your child apply glue to the first stroke line of capital B and then stick buttons or beads onto the glue.

  • Repeat with all strokes on the capital letter and then do the same with the lowercase letter.

  • Ask your child what letter this is and which is the capital/lower, as well as what sound they make. Ask them what other words they can think of that start with B.

  • Come back to the paper when it is dry and practice tracing the buttons/beads (gently so they don’t fall off) with pointer finger or a soft paintbrush.

  • Other fun ways to practice writing is in the sand, with chalk, molding with playdough, etc. If your child is ready, have them practice tracing or writing the letters with a marker, crayon or pencil. A couple resources with larger letters to start with can be found here:

Day 4: Blending

1) Review letters A, T, C, B names and sounds

2) Place lowercase a and t paper cards next to each other

3) Point under letter a and say its sound

4) Point under letter t and say its sound

5) Slide your finger under the letters from a to t while blending the sounds together to say the word ‘at’

6) Guide your child in steps 3-5

7) Add letter c in front of the letters and repeat the process with all three letters for the word ‘cat’

8) Remove letter c and add letter b to repeat the process for the word ‘bat’

Bonus Math Activity:

Match the objects with the numeral

Watch it in this video:

Materials:

10 small objects or pictures of quantities of objects from 1-10 or a die and flashcards of numerals 1-10.

  • Place a quantity of objects, a picture of objects or roll the die in front of the child and have them declare/count how many objects/dots there are (have them recount with you if they did not get the correct amount).

  • Have them select the numeral that represents that quantity.

This activity could also be done as a matching game with all flashcards and pictured quantities flipped over to start and then take turns flipping two cards over at a time, adding them to your pile if the quantities match.

Hey, I am Jolene,

Although I am a new homeschool mom. I do have ten years of teaching experience in various settings. I have been licensed in the areas of Spanish, English as a Second Language and Elementary Education. I have learned through my teaching experience that while there can be a lot of great things happening at mainstream schools, there are also many aspects of the mainstream school experience that are not necessary or are not effective. I am excited to embark on a homeschool journey with my children where I get to craft an experience for them that truly assists them in developing the skills that allow who they are to impact the world around them.
