Week 2

Letter T Lesson Prep

  • Print the digital downloads for all three days. Materials needed: Glue, scissors, crayons, yarn or colored tape(masking tape would work), black felt(optional), wiggle eyes(optional)

  • For some younger children, depending on their ability to cut, you may want to cut out all the letters and shapes beforehand

  • Practice beforehand how you will explain and demonstrate to your child how to complete the craft

  • Keep in mind that the goal is not for the child’s craft to be perfect, and it is not wrong if they choose to do it differently than I have it pictured in my example!

  • Adult supervision is required to ensure the child is able to safely handle the materials and is given help when needed

  • Fold the sheet with the dotted lines down the middle so that the capital appears on one side and the lower case appears on the other side with the object

The downloads for this lesson contain a craft in which all of the animal features are paper cut outs. If you want to upgrade to a version that is mailed to you with craft materials for animal features, check it out here:

Week 2

Letter T Lesson Plans

Day 1 Lesson Plan:

Letter T Animal Alphabet Craft

Skills practiced: Child practices recognizing letter T by spending time cutting it out, holding it, gluing it (fine motor skills), and transforming it into a memorable animal, a tiger! Child hears and practices the sound of letter T.

  • Introduce the Letter T to your child by showing them the capital letter and saying: this is letter T

  • Introduce the sound letter T makes by saying: T says t, t-t-t. Say it with me, t-t-t.

  • Show your child the picture of the tiger and ask them: what animal is this? …Yes this is a tiger. T-T-Tiger has letter T in it(point to the T at the beginning of the word and run your finger under the word as you say it). Ask your child to say it with you again as you run your finger under it. (If your child doesn’t want to say it with you, no big deal.)

  • Your child cuts out letter T (unless you already did). Give them as much help as they need. Practice the sounds of Letter T again with the paper letter they have cut out.

  • Tell your child they will get to decorate the letter T as a tiger. Show them the picture of the finished project and explain to them what the pieces are that they need to cut out. Help them cut out the pieces and show them where to glue them and assist them as needed.

  • Celebrate the completed craft and practice T-Tiger starts with T.

  • Let the craft dry and find a prominent place to hang/display it!

Day 2 Lesson Plan:

Lower Case T

Skills practiced: Child practices recognizing upper and lower-case letter t by seeing a display of the upper and lower-case letter and practices the sound of letter t. Child colors in a picture of a taco (fine motor skill).

  • Review the tiger craft on display. Asking the child what animal it is and what sound we hear at the beginning of its same. Indicate that the tiger may be hungry and wants to eat something that starts with letter T.

  • Take out the upper-case letter T side of the folded paper and practice the sound of the letter and ask the child to think of something that starts with T that the tiger could eat.

  • Reveal the lower-case side of the folded sheet and ask what picture is on it and what sound does it start with. This is what the tiger is hungry for! Tell the child in order to feed it to the tiger they need to color it in.

  • While your child is coloring in the taco, help them to notice the letter on the page and tell them that it is also letter t. It is lower case t. Or sometimes with small children I call it little t. It also says ‘t’ like capital(big) T.

  • Practice T says t, t-t-t. Taco starts with ‘t’, t-t-taco.

  • You may want to ask them which taco ingredients also start with T… tortilla and tomato!

  • Cut out the colored in taco and have the child bring it to be displayed next to the tiger so he can eat it when he gets hungry.

Day 3 Lesson Plan:

Writing Letter T

Skills Practiced: Child practices the writing strokes that create the upper and lower-case letter by tracing with various materials(for this lesson it is tape but you can glue a different material like yarn or trace with finger).

  • With the writing letter print out, have your child stick a piece of tape of the same length onto the first stroke line of the capital letter and then do the second stroke line. Repeat with the lower-case letter.

  • Ask your child what letter this is and which is the capital/lower case, as well as what sound they make. Ask them what words they can think of that start with T. Remind them of tiger and taco if they need help and assist them in finding other words that start with the same sound.

  • Practice tracing the letter by having the child run their pointer finger on the tape in order of the strokes.

  • Other fun ways to practice writing is in the sand, with chalk, molding with playdough, etc. If your child is ready, have them practice tracing or writing the letters with a marker, crayon or pencil. A couple resources with larger letters to start with can be found here:

Bonus Math Activity: Counting

Watch it in this video:

Materials: small objects for counting and a container or basket

  • Place an amount of objects that is a little more that you think your child can count up to on the table or floor in front of them. Place a basket or container next to them for placing the objects in as they count.

  • Ask them to count how many objects there are as they place them into the container. You may assist them with any numbers they skip or make an error with or maybe you just take a mental note and address it next time.

  • When they get to a point where they cannot continue counting you can assist them to count the remaining objects.

Repeat this process. Do this again another day this week and into the future, adding more objects to count higher.

  • It can be fun to use different objects each time or to be creative with it. For example it could be army men jumping an obstacle or bears going into a cave.

Link to the common core standards that most states base what they teach in each grade off of, can be useful to get an idea of skills your kindergartener may be ready to practice if you don’t know where to start.

Hey, I am Jolene,

Although I am a new homeschool mom. I do have ten years of teaching experience in various settings. I have been licensed in the areas of Spanish, English as a Second Language and Elementary Education. I have learned through my teaching experience that while there can be a lot of great things happening at mainstream schools, there are also many aspects of the mainstream school experience that are not necessary or are not effective. I am excited to embark on a homeschool journey with my children where I get to craft an experience for them that truly assists them in developing the skills that allow who they are to impact the world around them.
